62 William Calverley, the elder,¹ to Sir Robert Plumpton [1480 × 1489] (No.

Right worshipfull cousin, after due recomendations I comend me vnto
you, letting you wytt I am enformed þat ye are good master vnto my
cousin John Baylton,² praying you of your gud contynuance therin for
my sake. Sir, I vnderstand my cousin Sir Christofer Ward³ hath put
him ther to an occupation of the kyngs. Sir, if ther be any man that
wold wrong him therin I desire you therin þat you will be his good
master for my sake, as I may doe you any pleasure hereafter, which I
shalbe redy. With grace of God at altymes with you, who have you in
his keeping.

LETTER XVIII.

To my right worshipfull cousin Sir Robert Plumpton.

Right worshipfull Cousin, after due recomendations, I comend
me unto you, letting you wytt I am enformed ye are good master
unto my cousin John Baylton, praying you of your good con-
tynuance therin for my sake. Sir, I understand my cousin Sir
Christofer Ward hath put him ther to an occupation of the Kyngs.
Sir, if ther be any man that wold wrong him therin, I desire you
therin that you will be his good master for my sake, as I may doe
you any pleasure hereafter, which I shalbe redy, with grace of God,
at altymes, who have you in his keeping.
Be your owne WILLIAM CALLVERIEY the older. a

a William Calverley, esq. of Calverley and Esholt, com. Ebor. Agnes, daughter of
Sir John Tempest, knt. was living his widow in 1489; their eldest son was of the
same name as his father. It appears from the pedigree in Thoresby, that Amice, sister
of William Calverley, esq. was the wife of a Mr. Robert Baildon, 24 Hen. VI. The
John Baylton here mentioned was doubtless their descendant.
