Tripartite indenture of William Plompton, kt,1 granting, by licence of
the king and of William Whittlesey, archbishop of York, to God, to the
Holy and Undivided Trinity, to the Blessed Virgin and all the Saints,
to the altar of the Holy Trinity behind the high altar in the collegiate
church of Ripon and to Sir Henry de Plompton, chaplain, a messuage
with buildings and appurtenances near Bedern in Ripon; 24s rent from
his water-mill at Plumpton; a messuage with a bovate of land and
appurtenances in the vill of ‘Kirkstainley’; 3 tofts and a mark of annual
rent with appurtenances in Kirkby Malzeard, and 28s o¼d rent with
appurtenances in Grewelthorpe. To be held of him and his heirs so
that divine service may be celebrated in perpetuity under conditions
below stated: viz. that the said Henry shall have for life all the aforesaid
premises, with authority to appoint and remove at will a suitable
chaplain to serve in his place. After the death of the said Henry it shall
be for the donor or his heirs to present to the Chapter of Ripon, within
40 days next ensuing, a suitable chaplain to be instituted and inducted
to the chantry and its appurtenances, and thus at each vacancy
following. In case of such appointment not-being made within 40 days
the Chapter of Ripon shall appoint a chaplain, who, after swearing an
oath faithfully to perform divine service and to preserve, and never to
sell, let to farm, mortgage, pledge or otherwise dispose of the books,
chalices and ornaments, lands, rents and tenements pertaining to the
chantry, shall be instituted and inducted.The chaplain shall celebrate daily, without interruption, for the
beneficial estate of the donor during his lifetime and for other bene-
factors of the chantry, saying Placebo and Dirige, with appropriate
prayers and commendations for the souls of the donor’s progenitors
and ancestors, for his soul and those of his heirs and successors, for Sir
Henry Plompton and those to whom he is beholden; also for Sir John
Schupton, chaplain, and his progenitors and for all the faithful departed.Any sale, mortgage or alienation of any property pertaining to the
chantry shall be held to be invalidated by force of this tripartite charter.The donor’s seal, together with the seal of the Chapter of Ripon, of
the second part, is appended and is to remain with the donor; the seals
of the Chapter and of Sir Henry, of the third part, have been appended
and shall remain with the Chapter; the seals of the donor and of Sir
Henry are appended.Witnesses: Lord Thomas de Bourne, lord of Studley, Andrew de Mer-
kingfeild, Richard de Goldsburgh, kts, Simon Ward, John de Clou-
therow, Roger de Hewyk and others. Ripon, Wednesday, the feast of

faire seales, the first being a ram, & the other the five fusils vpon a
triangle with the corner uppermost, & hath written in the circumference

1 CB,215 is an almost verbatim copy of this one; it bore the same 2 seals.
