183 The earl of Northumberland to Sir Robert Plumpton, 31 January [1499 ×
1503] (No. 52, p. 31)Cosin Sir Robart Plompton, I commend me vnto you, & am informed
þat ye pretend a tytle & clame vnto a litle land in Rybstone, the which
without tyme of mynde hath belonged vnto the parson of Spofford the
tyme being, and hath [. . .]a always bene at his disposition to now lait
that, as I pereciue, ye be aboutward, against all right to imbarr &
exclud my [p. 32] chapleyn, now parsonn ther,1 and [. . .]b my service
is the same; wherof I greatly marvill, considring his predesessors alway
hertofore hath quietly & peasibly had it. And furthermore, well assured
I am, cousen, that my chaplayn wold not convit to haue it, but for the
[. . .]c aforesaid, & in the right of his church, the which for that I [am]
patron thereof, I must & will, in that I can, helpe to defend as myne
owne inheritaunce. Wherefore I desire & pray you noe further to
intromete you with the sayd land & right of his church more then ye
haue in tyme past, in the dayes of other his predesessours. And in case
ye medely will, wherof I wold be right sory, know ye veryly ye cannot
haue my good will & favour. And that morover it shalbe greatly against
my will that ye or any other shall wrong me in the right of the same,

To my right trusty and welbeloved Cousin, Sir Robart Plompton,
knight.Cosin Sir Robart Plompton, I commennd me unto you, and am
informed that ye pretend a tytle and clame unto a litle land in
Rybstone, the which without tyme of mynde hath belonged unto

his disposition to now lait that, as I perceive, ye be aboutward
