51 Richard Greene1 to Sir Robert Plumpton [possibly 8 February
1486/7] (No. 111, p. 67)My ful especial master, I recomende me to you. Please it you to wyte
that this same day I haue deliuered mee a letter from my lord of
Northumberland wherby his lordship hath streitly charged Mr Neuil2
and al his seruants, and me, as to morow, to be at Toplyf, both there
to see his woods, parke, and game, and furthwith by his seruants to be
ascertayned in euery behalfe, acording to his said writing. For so it is,
Sir, that ther are complaynts mad of the keepers of the game, wherin
my lord is sore displeased withall, as I shall shew to you hereafter.
Wherfor, Sir, I pray you to take noe displeasure for þat I am not with
them at Knaresbrough as tomorow. Sir, I pray you to send me word
by this bearer how my sayd lord and Mr Gascoygne3 departed in all
matters; and also what day Mr Gascoygne ridds up towards London
from his place at Gaukthorp. And, Sir, I trust þat my servant, this
bearer, shal find you his good master, as wel in the reports made to
you of him, as in other matters for which he is bounde to you. And
thus, Sir, it is not for you to forgeet þe matter þat I wrote to you in
concernyng Sir John Wixeley;4 so you her many askers of guds. And
thus Jesu keepe you. Written in hast at Rippon, þe Thursday next after

b Sir William Gascoigne, kt. father of Master Gascoigne here named, and to whom
Letter XXVI. p. 34, is addressed, had had in his life time the custody of the castle
of Knaresborough under the Earl of Northumberland. At his death, the son was
under age, when his wardship may have devolved upon the Earl, his uncle; but from
this time, 4 Mar. 2 Hen. VII. 1486, Sir Robert Plumpton acted as deputy for the
Earl, and had the custody of the castle of Knaresborough: at least, the contents of
the letter next following imply that such was the fact.c Sir John Whixley, chaplain. (See note to Letter II.)

and Richard Plumpton, clerk, a co-feoffee of the manor of Sir Robert Plumpton, kt.
