238 John Doddington to William Plumpton, [26 March 1543] (No. 23, p.
201)Right worshipfull,a in my most hertyest maner I commend me vnto
you, and likewise to my good mistress your wife, and very glad wold
be to heare of your good health and all your children. Theas be to
certifie you that it hat pleased God Almightie to take into his mercy
the late person of Sacomp, Mr John Petty.1 He departed this tronsetory
life vpon Easter Day last at vij of the clock before nowne, whose sowle
I pray Jesus perdon. And let vs pray that he shall succede him be of
no worse sorte than he hath bene.I and all my neighbors hartyly desire your mastership in also he that
shall [p. 203] haue the sameb be minded to be resident and abid vpon
the same personage, than that you will moue him that cumes: Sir
Christopher Bird, person, who honestly did kepe the cure vnder the
forsaid late person and the maintenment of God service, and may be
his depete, as he was to the other late person; wherof I and all your
other tennants wold be very glad.Sir, I haue sent you the kings writ of dedimus potestatum by Mr Birnand2
with a letter sealed in a box, which I trust is come to your hands; and
what your pleasure shal be to commaund me in the premises, I pray
you let me know and I shall be glad to accomplish the same. And I
pray you haue me hartyle commended to Mr Robart Plompton, your
son, and to my mistress [. . .]c <his> wife, and to Mr Dinis, your son,
and Mr Birnand. And I pray you informe Mr Birnand his son is [. . .]d

1 John Petty’s successor at Sacombe was Richard Sharp, admitted 3 May 1543, on
presentation of William Plumpton in right of his wife.2 Probably John Birnand of Knaresborough (d. by 1545), son of Robert Birnand
(d.1502). John was receiver of Knaresborough and Pontefract, 1526 for life, an appointment
which ‘may well have been due to some connection with the steward, Lord Darcy’, and
to his professional skill rather than prominence in West Riding society, Smith, 68;

To the right worshipfull William Plompton of Plompton, in the
county of York, Esquire, deliver with sped.Right worshipfull, in my most hertyest maner I commend me
unto you, and likewise to my good Mistres your wife, and very glad
wold be to heare of your good health and all your children.

the living of Sacombe 3 May 1543, upon the presentation of William Plumpton, in right
of Isabella his wife. Clutterbuck's Herts. ex reg. Longland - where the name Palfre-
man is manifestly an error for Plumpton.
