Right worshipfull Sir, after dew recomenndations, pleaseth you to know
pat, after as I am enformed, one John Bailton of Knaresbrough of layt bought
& receiued of my kynsman, ?e brynger, a ton of wyne, for the which he hath
nought content. And noe for his offence all his goods standeth vnder arrest &
in your will. I wold & hartely pray you that my sayd kynsman myght, for my
sake, either haue his wyne againe, or els contentation therefore, after there
comaunds; & ye therefore shalt have my good hart in any thing I may dooe for
you. So knoweth our Lord, who haue you in his protection. From Fountayne,
this same Tewsday.

1 Elected abbot of the Cistercian abbey of St
Mary of Fountains, near Ripon, in 1478, he appears to have ruled there until
1494, VCH, Yorks, iii, 138.
2 Between 1446 and 1458 Sir William had been on
terms of friendship with the abbey; Thomas Swynton (by 1471 Darneton?s
predecessor as abbot) conferred at length with
him on two occasions; his minstrel and players entertained
there, and he was paid a fee of ?3 6s 8d as feodary, J.T. Fowler (ed.),
