Inquisition at Derby before Edmund Perpoint escheator of Derbyshire
by authority of a writ of diem clausit extremum directed to him and to this
inquisition. Henry Columbell of Derby, Henry Tykhull of Chaddesden,
Godfrey Pilkington of Stanton, John Ashby of Chellaston, John Smalley
of Alvaston, William Frounches of Little Chester, Robert Tibnull of
Dale, gents, John Stapulford of Alvaston, Nicholas Cuger of Chad-
desden, Nicholas Brashaw of Windley, William Condrom of ‘Lutch-
worth’, Robert Cokke of Spondon, Nicholas Cokke of the same, George
Lister of Little Chester, William Merry of Chellaston and Thomas
Tykling of Kirk Langley1 say on oath that on the day before he
died William Plompton, kt, was seised of the manors of Ockbrook,
Chaddesden, Darley, Stanton, Edensor, Pilsley, Hassop, Wormhill,
Chelmorton, Castleton, Rowland, Carlton, Lees, Flagfield, Wardlow,
Bakewell, Bely, Twyford and Lockhaw with appurtenances in Derby-
shire, and of two messuage with appurtenances in Spondon, a messuage
with appurtenances in Broughton, 2 messuages within 2 gardens and
appurtenances in Tideswell, and a messuage with appurtenances in
Newbold, and of the advowsons or nominations to the chantries of the
Holy Cross in the church of Bakewell and the Blessed Mary in the
church of Elton, and also of other lands and tenements in Wheston,
Martinside, Combes, Betfield and Hurdlow. Thus seised, he, by charter
now submitted in evidence, conveyed the premises to feoffees [names
as in no. 42], who in virtue of this grant were seised of the same and,
by their charter submitted in evidence, demised them to William for
life without imputation of waste, remainder to Robert Plompton, jnr,
his son, and the legitimate heirs of his body, remainder, in case of lack
of heirs, to the right heirs of William in perpetuity.Also that the manor of Ockbrook is held of the king in chief, by
fealty only, and its clear value is £13 6s 8d yearly. The manor of
Chaddesden and 2 messuages in Spondon with appurtenances are held
of the king as of his honor of Tutbury, parcel of the Duchy of Lancaster,
by fealty and a rent of 32s yearly for all services. Clear value, £6 13s
4d. The manor of Darley with appurtenances is held of the king as of
the honor of Tutbury by fealty and a rent of 3s yearly. Clear value, £5
6s 8d yearly. The manor of Stanton with appurtenances is not held of
the king, but of whom, they are ignorant. The manor of Edensor with
appurtenances is held of the king as of the aforesaid honor, by fealty
and a rent of 8s yearly. Clear value, £10 yearly. The manor of Pilsley
with appurtenances is held of the king as of the aforesaid honor, by
fealty and a rent of 5s yearly. Clear value, £5 6s 8d yearly. The manor
of Hassop with appurtenances is held of the king as of the aforesaid
honor, by fealty and a rent of 3s yearly. Clear value, £7 yearly.
The manor of Wormhill with appurtenances in Wheston, Martinside,
Combes and Betfield is held of the king as of his castle of the High
Peak, by fealty and a rent of £3 13s iod yearly. Clear value, £8. The
manor of Chelmorton with appurtenances in Hurdlow is held of the
king as of the honor of Tutbury, by fealty and a rent of 6d yearly.
Clear value, 16s 8d. The manor of Broughton with appurtenances is
held of the prior of Tutbury, by fealty and a rent of 7s yearly. Clear
value, 13s 4d yearly. 2 messuages and a garden with appurtenances in
Tideswell are held of Joan Meverell by fealty only. Clear value, 6s 8d
yearly. A messuage in Newbold with appurtenances is held of the abbot
of Welbeck, by what services they are ignorant. Clear value, 23s 4d.Also that on the day of his death William Plompton, kt, held no
other lands in Derbyshire. Also that he died 15 Oct. 1480, and that
Margaret, wife of John Rocliffe, and Elizabeth, wife of John Suthill are
’consanguines’ and next heirs of William namely, daughters of William
Plompton, esq., son of the aforesaid Sir William. Also that Margaret is
aged 21 and more and that Elizabeth is aged 20 and more.[Latin]
