Indenture between Sir William Plompton, kt, and Thomas Beckwith, esq., witnessing an agreement between the parties for a marriage between Thomas’s eldest son, William, and Elizabeth Plompton, daugh- ter of Sir William. Within 8 days of such marriage Thomas is to make to William and Elizabeth a legal estate in lands and tenements yielding a clear annual income of £10 13s 4d entailed upon them and their lawful heirs male. Also lands, tenements, rents recoveries and services held by Thomas in sole seisin within the town of Clint between the river Nidd and Thornton Beck, and within the towns of Muston, Filey, Halnaby,1 Little . . . and ‘South Ethington’ in Yorks shall revert to William after Thomas’s death, free of all rent charges, statute merchant or causes of execution made or to be made by Thomas. Also lands held in jointure by Thomas’s wife Elizabeth shall remain to William and his heirs after her death, similarly discharged [etc.]. furthermore any feofee or feoffees holding lands to the use of Thomas, except those held by feoffment to the use of William and Elizabeth, as above stated, are to make lawful release to William and his heirs male within six months of his request for such release, or to his next heir or heirs male at his or their request, free of rent charges, statutes merchant or causes of execution. Provided always that Thomas or his feoffees may have
use of such lands to the yearly value of £4 to hold to them or one of them for life.
For his part Sir William is to pay to Thomas £23 6s 8d on the wedding day, and with other sufficient persons jointly and severally to give bond for the payment to Thomas of £10 at the feast of St Wilfrid thereafter [12 Oct.], £20 at the feast of St Peter ad Vincula, known as Lammas [1 Aug.] and three further annual payments of £20 at the latter feast.
Should Elizabeth die without a surviving male heir by William2 the sums due on dates following her decease shall not be leviable.
