Indenture between Sir William Plompton, kt, and Brian Roucliffe, 3rd baron of the Exchequer, witnessing that Sir William granted the keeping and marriage of his granddaughter and co-heir Margaret Plompton, daughter of his son William Plompton, deceased, to be married to John Roucliffe, Brian’s son and heir apparent, at a convenient and speedy time, and at Brian’s expense. Also that Sir William will endow the couple and their lawful heirs before Easter next coming after the date of this indenture with the manor of Nessfield with appurtenances, with reversion, in case of lack of such heirs, to Sir William and his heirs. Moreover that Sir William is to retain the issues of the manor for the next 5 years, and for 5 years thereafter a yearly sum of 10m therefrom. That if Sir William should die within this period his executors are to have no claim upon the premises.
For which marriage and feoffment Brian Roucliffe is to pay to Sir William, in addition to the sum already paid by him 400m, that is 100m ‘in hand’, and 20m a year payable at Pentecost and St Martin in Winter by equal portions until the whole sum is paid. It is agreed that if John Roucliffe should die within 10 years Brian and his executors are to receive £50 as reimbursement out of the issues and profits of Sir William’s lands. The parties undertake that all these covenants are to be performed without fraud or bad faith. [English]
