Indenture between Robert Plompton, kt, and John Willymott witnessing that Sir Robert let to farm to John Willymott the manor of Kinoulton with the demesne and a close on the south side of the barn between the manor and a tenement held by Brian Smith, for nine years from the 3 May next coming, at a yearly rent of £22 for the manor, and 20s for the close, payable at the feasts of Martinmas in Winter and Pentecost in equal portions.
The tenant is to provide free stabling, fodder, hay and grass twice yearly for four days for Sir Robert’s horses and those of his retinue to the number of 20. In case of a longer stay the tenant shall receive ¾d a day (viz. 24 hours) per horse, and 1½d per horse for a week’s pasturage. For the period of their visit Sir Robert, his menie and servants shall occupy the hall, chamber, bakehoue, brewhouse, kitchen and stables whilst the tenant and his household confine themselves temporarily to the hall and chambers at the other end thereof, and to all other offices belonging to the manor.
The tenant shall maintain the walls of the building with stone and earth and the roofs with thatching, and carry out hedging and ditching. At the end of his tenure he shall bear the cost of removal and leave the premises in good order, making good any deficiency which may be
found at the time of his departure. He shall provide meat and drink for Sir Robert’s steward and reeve and their servants when they come on Sir Robert’s business, and hay, litter and provender for their horses. He shall not fell timber. Re-entry clause.
