LETTER V.

Right trusty and welbeloved, I recomend me unto you, signe-
fiing unto you I am informed on the behalfe of my right welbeloved
in God, the prior of the Monesty of St. John Evangelist, He-
lagh Park, of my foundation,a of certaine traverses depending
betewt him and owne Georg Fulbarne for the right and intrest
of one spring liing within the tewinship of Litle Ribston, within
my Lordship of Spoforth, which, as I perceive, you have bought
of the said Georg, and so entendeth to fell it to your los. I
desire and also chargeth you that ye sufer the saving of it, unto the
time the better we may know to whom the right of the same
belongeth. Written at Livingfeid, the xvii day of December in
the xix yeare of the reign of our sovraign Lord, King Henry viii.(17 Dec. 1527.) H. NORTHUMBERLAND.b
a Leland in his Itinerary says. "From Helagh pryory, scant a mile to Helagh vil-
lage, I saw great ruins of an ancient manor of stone, with a fair wooded park thereby,
that belonged tot he Earl of Northumberland. It was, as far as I can perceive, sum-
tymes the Hagets' land." Geoffrey Haget was the founder of the monastery in
Helagh-park, for Regular Canons, of which Richard Roundale was at this date Prior;
but how or at what time the lands and representation of the Hagets were acquired by
the Percies, I have not seen any account.b HenryPercy, sixth Earl of Northumberland, K.G. ob. 1537, s.p.
