l’re deliv’ed.TRUSTY and welebelovid frend y comaund me to zow
certifying zow yt. and zor Sustyr be not zit maried y trust
to god y know yt. where she may be maried to a gentylman of
iij C. m’rc of lyvelod ye which is a grete gentylman born and
of gode blode and yf ze yink yt y shall labore ony ferder y’ynne
y p’y zow send me word by ye bringer of ys I’re for y have
spoke wt. ye p’ties and yey have granted me yt. yey wolle p’ccde
no ferder y’ynne tyll y speke wt. hem azen And y’fore y p’y
zow send me word in hast how yt ze wylle be desposed y’ynne
and god have zow in hys kepyng wettin at Ampthill ye xj day

1454. 32 H. VI.Edmund succeeded his grandfather, Reginald Lord Grey, of Ruthyn, in 1441. In
1464 he was appointed Lord Treasurer to Edward IV. and the next year created Earl
of Kent. He died in 1489. The barony of Ruthyn is now in the Earl of Sussex.Autograph. Pl. XIX. No 13.
These Letters discover to us the great attention paid by families to the proper dispo-
sition of the female branches in suitable and advantageous marriages.Pl. XIV. No 8.
N. B. At the bottom of this Letter in the hand-writing of John Paston, is the follow-
ing memorandum,“Librat. pr. Will’. Aleyn Valett’. dēi dēi xiiij die Julij Ao. xxxijo. H. VI.”
Seal of red wax, the impression defaced, but it has a neat braid of straw round it.

LETTER LII.
To my trusty and well beloved John Paston, Esquire, be this
Letter delivered.TRUSTY and well beloved Friend, I commend me to
you, certifying you that and (if) your Sister be not yet
married, I trust to God I know that where she may be married
to a gentleman of 300 marks (200l.) of livelihood, the which
is a great gentleman born, and of good blood, and if ye think
that I shall labour any farther therein, I pray you send me word
by the bringer of this Letter, for I have spoken with the parties,
and they have granted me that they will proceed no farther
therein till I speak with them again, and therefore I pray you
send me word in haste how that ye will be disposed therein,
and God have you in his keeping. Written at Ampthill, the
11th day of July last past.By EDMOND GREY, LORD of HASTYNGS,
WAIFFORD, and RUTHYN.11 ½ by 3 ½.
