356. ALICE YDLAYE TO ?
[23 April 1481.]
Alice, widow of Thomas Idle or Ydlaye, married William Poche. Her
son Richard Idle claimed the manor of Drayton, of which his uncle, William
Idle, had obtained possession by force, being maintained by the Duke of
Suffolk. Sir William Stonor and Humphrey Forster were directed on July 31,
1481, to hold an inquiry (Cases before the King's Council, pp. 116–7, Selden
Soc.) It is possible that in consequence this letter came into Stonor's
possession, though it is not certain that the letter belongs to the collection.
No. 243 probably relates to the same matter, and should therefore be dated
July 9, 1481. Similarly No. 280 would seem to belong to the early summer
of 1481. In 1481 St. George's day was on a Monday, which suits well with
this letter—"Satterdaye last" and "thorsday." The original is somewhat
badly damaged. From A.C. li. 90.[I] Recommande me unto yow . . . . . gevyng you knowlege pat
